The sulfur compounds in roofing tar have very low odor thresholds in the parts per billion range. My guess is that you are experiencing normal new roof smells. It s also entirely possible that air from the attic space is being drawn into your home from unsealed holes where electric cables and plumbing vent pipes penetrate the top plates of the walls that connect to the roof trusses or the ceiling joists. Odors from rubber roof adhesives have a sweet organic odor solvent odor that people begin to smell when the concentration in air is much higher.

Using hot roofing tar can easily cause odor complaints because the odor is strong pungent and can be smelled at very low concentrations in the air. Roofing tar will also protect your roof from wind and from snow and water which can collect on a flat roof. If you are talking about a flat roof done by pouring hot liquid tar over it then i have no experience how long that smell will linger. My head aches and i am feeling nauseated.

This smell is because of the sealants on the asphalt shingles that naturally melt and set the shingles in place. An hour ago i believed i didn t make a terrible decision that will exacerbate my migraine attacks. Its just the volatiles in the tar escaping. If you are talking about shingles the smell will fade pretty quickly after they are finished.

Roofing tar is often used for tar and gravel roofs or to fix leaks on a roof. Tar has an extremely potent and pungent odor. But i would think somewhat longer than for shingles. New asphalt shingles can give off a tar like smell that for some comes off as being very strong and irritating.

Just as some individuals are extremely sensitive to tobacco smoke in the air many people. Basically when you have new shingles installed the sun cooks them to really get them to set onto your roof. Smelling the odors does not indicate over exposure. Leaving the house open all night and a special 40 air conditioner filter diminished the odor greatly though the smell is worsening as the day warms up.

Today the roof is finished. It looks great and even better doesn t leak.
